Rosanne Robertson at Purple this Wednesday 27th

Rosanne Robertson is an artist often using action and sound.

Robertson was recently selected as an emerging live artist and provocateur of Manchester by Doodlebug for Dazed and Confused.

“For me Rosanne’s very much a ‘doodlebug’, that is to say, a provocateur who tirelessly works across all platforms, creating work by any medium necessary and who works beneath the skin,”

– Michael Anthony Barnes-Wynters (aka Doodlebug).

We’ve been trying to get Rosanne to perform one of her works within our ur:nights for a while, and finally we have her. This is a busy time for Rosanne as she has just been setting up the Penhouse NQ; “A new not for profit artist’s space in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. A place for making, doing, sharing and showing”, which I recently visted. They are welcoming of visitors and have plenty of initiatives for artists to become involved with, I know Sandra Bouguerch is contributing to their ‘sound archive’ project and there are various residences for those wishing to spread their wings. This is bound to become a thriving art enclave, the views across the city rooftops and boundless light streaming in is sure to inspire anyone working on those beautiful wood block floors. Don’t just take my word for it, their website tells much more (http://thepenthousenq.tumblr.com/).

There is more to Rosanne Robertson though, take a look at her website (http://rosannerobertson.com/) to get an idea of where she is coming from with her art practice, or keep up to date with her through Twitter, (https://twitter.com/R0sanneR).

Rafael Perez to guest at White Night

Rafael Perez is an artist who has been doing sculpture for the past 4 years in the city of Manchester.

Rafael has recently exhibited at the Manchester Free for Arts Festival, and currently exhibiting a collection of three dimensional paintings at the Eighth Day Cafe on Oxford Road: http://eighth-day.co.uk/bubble-collection-by-rafael-perez-in-the-cafe-11212-until-30012013/

Rafael – “I see the sculpture as the ultimate explorative vehicle in which to communicate thoughts and ideas, perceptions and feelings about ourselves and our contemporary situation; in order to therefore, establish a critical interest in the true human condition. In very few other ways can the viewer feel identified and connected to the work of art, than with sculpture, particularly, figurative representations of the human body”.

We can be sure of something especially thought provoking from Rafael during our night, you can see more of his current work on his website http://rafaelperezart.wix.com/uk#!

Rosanne Robertson to guest at white night

We are announcing yet another superb guest artist to White:Rosanne Robertson.

Rosanne Robertson is an artist often using action and sound.

Robertson was recently selected as an emerging live artist and provocateur of Manchester by Doodlebug for Dazed and Confused.

“For me Rosanne’s very much a ‘doodlebug’, that is to say, a provocateur who tirelessly works across all platforms, creating work by any medium necessary and who works beneath the skin,” – Michael Anthony Barnes-Wynters (aka Doodlebug).

You can find out more about Rosanne through her website, and her latest project, The Penthouse, A new artist’s space in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. A place for making, doing, sharing and showing.

Guest Artist Sandra Bouguerch Performing at White

Sandra Bouguerch is an interdisciplinary artist exploring her ongoing enquiry into the Notion of Self. Her practice incorporates an array of media such as installation, photography, sound, performance, video and text through which she creates atmospheres for the viewers to experience.

After gaining a first class degree in Fine Art in 2012 Sandra was chosen to be included in three open submission exhibitions, which were the Neo:artprize, Neo:printprize and 53 Degrees North. Sandra has been selected by Hive Projects.org in their forthcoming 2012 Graduates’ show entitled ‘3 Degrees North’. She was also part of the Fringe and a member of ‘Noimageavailable’ group at the Liverpool Biennial 2012 and is a member of the Northwest art collective NEO:ARTISTS.

The basis of my practice is my individual experience of life, and, as such, I am often the central subject. This has been recently amplified through my life model role to highlight the many sharing commonalities, both physical and psychological that inform the human condition. In the life drawing environment I developed a heightened sense of surroundings, others, my body and myself and I utilise the feelings of tension and awareness in relation to the notion of self, expressing them using multi media and Installation.

The life-drawing environment reflects life in general and the many temporal experiences of tension and awareness within one’s own life; some being ephemeral whilst others are of a longer duration.

Whilst modelling I feel a transfer of force and energy between myself the perceived passive model, and the active observing artist. I record and communicate this performance aspect in numerous ways to create tension or awareness. Through my own experiences of life modelling I aim to elicit memories of physical pain, exposure and perceived vulnerability reflecting back to the spectator.

White night to include Mike Chevez-Dawson

The second guest artist to confirm for our White night is Mike Chevez-Dawson. He will undertake ‘Reworked Part 3’; this refers to the performance he did at The Contemporary Six gallery, for the ‘Paraphrase’ exhibition. The performance took place on Thursday 31st May 2012.

“Reworked was a responsive performance for ‘Paraphrase’ a show I devised and undertook in collaboration with fellow artist Richard Shields.

Taking the surrealist method ‘Frottage’ founded by Max Ernst in 1925, we provided variable pencil rubbings of the laser drawing ‘Details… (Portrait of Richard Shields, Inverted 09042012)’, we both reworked sections for 20minutes at a time, the performance took place on Thursday 31st May from 2.30pm until 5.30pm all drawings were available for £20 for the duration of the performance (all were purchased), afterwards the drawings escalated to £100 each (nfs).

During the performance two guest commentators made an appearance, 3pm – 4pm; Ryan Sewell twin brother of Brian an esteemed cultural critic in his own right, and from 4pm – 5pm Tim Rota associate director and curator of modern & contemporary collections. They kept a beady eye on on our activity – whilst making the odd comment and relevant quote to accompany the performance.

‘Reworked’ furthers both artists interest in value systems, labour and the participatory – alongside key issues and themes predominate in the overall ‘Paraphrase’ show.

Paper, Pencil, Laser drawing, Biro, Laptop, Furniture, Actors”

Mike recently featured within the ‘Ask A Curator’ event at the Cornerhouse, other recent projects have included; ‘The Bear Pit’, London. ‘Untitled Gallery’, PSL, Leeds. ‘Memory Flash’, Carter Presents, London. ‘Magda Archer: Crazy Mad’ Cornerhouse, Manchester. ‘Re-Covering’, Untitled Gallery, Manchester. Amongst many others.

ur:new colour white

We are putting together a new night of colour in our series of ‘art’ nights which embrace our philosophy of the experimental avant guard. The new colour in our series is White, and all that White evokes  Some of what our group and guests deliver will be literal, some not so. If you have been to previous nights then you will know just how ‘left of field’ things can be.

The first guest artist we can tell you about is Estelle Woolley. Estelle has appeared before at an ur:night, ‘Moon‘. Estelle recently won the public vote for ‘The People’s Prize’ in the annual open exhibition ‘Life, The Universe and Everything’ at The Aardvark Gallery, Chester. Other recent exhibitions have included ‘In The Woods Today“, ‘The Free For All‘ & ‘Panoply‘ amongst others. For more details about her and her work then have a look at her website or profile on Axis.

You can sign up to our Facebook group and event here, and invite anyone you want.
